Tasmanian Europa Poets' Gazette No 88, August 2011

Runner-up

The Monument

The monument stands, I gaze up high,

And see it reaching towards the sky.

Names of soldiers who bravely fought,

To outlast a tragedy the world hadn’t sought.

Imagine the scenes of battlefields,

The guns an’ screams an’ terror it yields.

So here I stand, humbled and small,

So many names that cover the wall.

Here stands the courage, the heart of the past:

The honour these soldiers deserve to the last.
